    Are you sure you mean 4 cm? That lawn would be small enough to hold in my palm.

    Let the remaining, unmown lawn be x cm on a side. Its area must be 1/4 the total. The total lawn is (x + 8) cm on a side.

    4x² = (x + 8)²

    Area of the square lawn = 4^2 = 16 square cm
    (3/4)(16) = 12 square cm
    4 square cm remaining
