I purchased a slew of battery operated Nest Protects because there are only two wired smoke detectors in my home and I want to increase coverage. I disconnected and removed the wired smoke detector. My question is; can I simply tuck the existing wires up into the ceiling and install the battery operated detector...

    Yes. That's what I did when my wired-in detector quit. I put marrettes over the wire ends. Mind you, some building codes call for wired in detectors so without knowing where you are, no one can say if you must, legally, have a wired-in one.

    I would cover the wires with electrical tape even though they have connectors. But yeah it seems safe.
