How is ionic bonding different from covalent bonding? How are they similar?

    Both types of bonding lead to strong attractions between atoms. In ionic bonding, electrons are transferred from one atom to another forming charged ions which attract one another. In covalent bonding, electrons are shared between two atoms, and this sharing causes the attraction between the atoms involved.
